Worming is of utmost importance to new puppy owners. It is imperative that the expectant mum has been regularly wormed during the year and then again during pregancy and also whilst feeding pups to minimise the worm larvae which transfersa in her milk. Its also worth familiarising yourself with the risk of toxocara which can pass from puppy to children and cause real health problem, even blindness.

Puppies should be wormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks whilst at the breeders. We provide the next dose with our puppies as you'll need to give a dose before its time to go to the vets for second vaccine. Then seek your vets advice on worming schedule.

Once the initial cycle of worms is broken, you will then need to worm your dog a minimum of 4 times per year with weight appropriate tablets. We use Drontal Suspension and Dronal Plus and Drontal XL together with Panacur.

As a puppy if using Drontal you give 1ml per kg of puppy. The liquid is given in a syringe dispenser. Personally I find it best to administer the wormer slowly under their tongue which encourages them to lick and swallow rather than breathe in (wormer could go down to their lungs or up and out their nostrils). The other popular brand is Panacur but this is given at a different dose and over 3 consecutive days rather than a single dose so we prefer Drontal.

Once bigger (10kg), dogs are given wormer tablets rather than liquid (1 tablet per 10kg of dog weight).

If they reach 30kg rather than 3 tablets you can purchase Drontal XL which is equivalent dose. You can top up with Drontal tablets if dog exceeds 30kg. Tablets can be broken and given if you need to give an 5kg dose (e.g - two and half tablets if 25kg) .

YOU CAN BUY WORMER ONLINE WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION AND ITS USUALLY CHEAPER THAN THE VETS AND POSTAGE FREE!

Why worm?

Worms cause health problems for the dog and can be transferred to humans. We treat against roundworms (including toxocara) also against hookworm and whipworm.

Children are particulary at risk as infection by roundworm can cause toxocara, which in some cases can lead to blindness. Since we raise pups in our home and have 2 children we are very aware of this risk to our children and subsequently to yours. We have a strict worming regime for mum and pups. We also worm before you take pup home so you can see how to give the liquid and we provide the next dose in a handy syringe pack, so you are prepared for when pup reaches 10 weeks old. At this stage you need to speak to your vet's practice about their recommended worming programme which you need to continue.

Where to buy wormer?

You do NOT need a vets prescription to buy wormer. You can purchase the wormer from any online canine pharmacy or if you ask us nicely in advance, then we'll add a bottle of puppy suspension or a packet of Drontal tablets, to our order so you can collect it with pup.
