Labradoodle History

A Labrador/Poodle cross was breed by the Guide Dog Association Victoria (“GDAV”) for a near blind woman in Hawaii whose husband suffered from allergies. One pup from the first litter, named Sultan proved to have an allergy friendly coat and was suitable to be a guide dog.

A gentleman by the name of Don Evans, had also been crossing Standard Poodles with field trial Labrador Retrievers in Northern Victoria, Australia who supplied breeding stock to 2 breeding centers in Victoria – Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. These centers breed Labradoodle to Labradoodle and experimented by introducing other pedigree breeds into the blend and so, a new breed evolved. Their vision was inspirational. There are now dedicated Australian Multi-Generational Labradoodle breeders, owners and lovers all over the world.

Decades on - the Australian Labradoodle is very distinct in appearance and nature. Careful and thoughtful breeding can consistently produce pups which are intelligent, loving, intuitive in nature and bouncing in life. Very much linked to its origins, Australian Labradoodles are being used as therapy and assistance dogs and are being recognised as an ideal pet and companion by families.

Most UK breeders breed 1st generation pups (F1) crossing a Labrador/Poodle. Some subsequently mate these F1 labradoodles to poodles or labradoodles. Each cross increases the generation (F2, F3. F4, F5, F6.....) until they become Multi-Gen Labradoodles A1, A2, A3...).

We breed Australian Labradoodles and occasionally a F1 British Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. We focus on the Australian lines as we like the medium size and the mellow yet mischevious temparament.

Some important points:

1 British Labradoodles are not the same as Australian Labradoodles, both in temparament and coat. Neither is better, simply different.

2 The internationally accepted method of classification is to add one to the lowest of the parent's generation. We cannot find any true British Multi-Gen labradoodles only foundation crosses.

3 In-breeding and line-breeding are starting in the UK for labradoodles, ensure a 0.0% inbreeding calculation.

4 Puppy socialisation is ESSENTIAL, ensure your puppy is raised with a family and used to household noises.

5 Ensure you understand how big the pup could grow to. Any puppy with standard poodle in the blend could grow very large. If this is too big, opt for a medium or large mini. We do not breed true tiny minis as we like a decent woof on a dog!
