Introducing Jesse-Jake (and "Austin", scroll down for a grown up photo of the pup). Jesse is our rescue cat - we also have pedigree Maine Coon cats with kittens occasionally available

Jesse is from our local RSPCA shelter and is a much loved member of our household. He is the calmest most puppy-friendly no-nonsense cat we could have wished for. We haven't any kitten photos to share, as he was adopted as an adult. My daughter chose the loudest un-neutered stray Tomcat whilst I was cooing over the cute fluffy kittens. She simply said "This one says he wants to come home with us and he says his name is Jesse-Jake". There was no arguing with that logic from a 3 year old, so home he came.

And she couldnt have picked any better. Jesse (now neutered) is the perfect cat for us. He is very vocal with his meows and funny chirps when he wants attention or food. He likes lazing in the sun and sleeping on beds. He's very affectionate yet very independent preferring not to be picked up. Fave foods are Felix or Whiskas (must be jelly not gravy) and he has recently converted us to individual foil pouches from the much cheaper tins.

All pups meet and socialise with Jesse. A good introduction to a cat who doesnt run, is invaluable to pups. Nevertheless, if your cat runs when introduced to your new puppy, the natural dog impulse will be to chase it. So please ensure you think about the best way to introduce your cat to pup when you get home to ensure they start their relationship with mutual respect. Consider holding the pup to meet the cat and ensure everyone doesnt fuss over the new puppy whilst ignoring the cat. At the end of the day unless your cat is very timid, they will usually both get on with life once they have defined their own boundaries.

Jesse does like to greet visitors on our driveway so if you are allergic to cats please take care.

Actually fond of puppies, Jesse occasionally snuggles up to watch TV with them on the sofa.

The pup whilst naturally curious initially, soon simply ignores Jesse when he doesnt run away or play "chase-me".

Left is David, Jesse and Jumble watching the football match. A brief sniff then they quickly settle to the big game.

Consider holding the pup rather than restraining the cat, when they first meet. Try not to make the introduction a big deal or force the cat to come closer.

Also, remember to get the cat a present too when you go to the petshop for puppy shopping!

Cat should not feel threatened when meeting the puppy.

Practically a pro, our Jesse is totally happy around pups, and in fact nuzzles them.

Left is "Jumble" (now known as "Austin") all grown up. Amazing to think he was the small pup in arms above with Jesse.

His puppy socialisation has clearly worked as he appears totally undisturbed by his feline pals.

I dont think he'd fit on my sofa anymore though...
